Budapest is sliced into two by a curve of the Danube.
On the west side is hilly Buda, crowned by the opulent Buda Castle and the Castle District, a collection of medieval, baroque and neo-classical buildings. On the east is Pest, where you’ll find the Gothic-revival Parliament Building, the moving ‘Shoes on the Danube’ memorial (an assortment of cast-iron shoes placed in remembrance of those killed on the riverbank during WWII), Heroes’ Square and the frescoed State Opera House.
Our exclusive Danube river cruises usually include a guided tour of Budapest, followed by free time to see the city under your own steam. You might like to stroll along the riverside promenade or go for a beer in a ruin bar (trendy watering holes set up in dilapidated pre-war buildings). Or, speaking of steam, you could go for a soak in one of the thermal baths that pepper the city – ideal for soothing tired legs after a few hours of sightseeing.
